A DOT SAP Evaluation (Department of Transportation SAP Evaluation) is an assessment conducted by a certified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) as part of the Return-to-Duty process for employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations.

The Return-to-Duty process includes two DOT SAP Evaluations: the Initial SAP Evaluation and the Follow-Up SAP Evaluation. Both are crucial to ensuring employees receive support to address substance use, meet DOT requirements,  and are fit to return to safety-sensitive duties.

Initial SAP Evaluation

The Initial SAP Evaluation is conducted to assess the extent of an employee’s substance use following a DOT Drug and Alcohol violation. The SAP comprehensively assesses the employee’s substance use history, current situation, and relevant factors, utilizing clinical interviews and standardized assessment tools. The SAP develops a personalized treatment or education plan based on the initial assessment. This plan may involve inpatient treatment programs, outpatient counseling, participation in educational courses geared toward substance use awareness, or even support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous.

Follow-Up SAP Evaluation

The Follow-Up SAP Evaluation occurs after the employee has completed the recommended treatment or education. Its purpose is to confirm the employee’s compliance with the treatment plan and readiness to resume duty. The SAP reviews treatment records, verifies completion, and conducts further clinical assessments to understand the employee’s progress better. Based on the follow-up evaluation, the SAP determines if the employee is eligible for Return-to-Duty testing.
